ENGLAND POEMS BY ALAN

“Nearku” Shorts:

The Dark Side of Beatrix Potter
            For Gene

In front parlor: twin greyhound
statues. Dead hares in their mouths.

How I Became a Writer:

Primary school game of telephone.
Secrets whispered in low register,
hearing loss ears. Passing a mew story along.

Memorial Garden Inside Winchester Cathedral

Eighty years after: fresh cut long
bladed grass bed for full bloom lilies.
Lit votive candles; devotionals for
a beloved teacher.

Sissinghurst Tower Studio Still Life

Two broken cups marked: Odds & Ends
at either end of work space. A lover’s portrait
on desk corner; a work in progress.

Standoff at Bateman’s

Narrow country road.  Two coaches
meet. Not passing today!
